iTelevision... What To Watch This Weekend (27/04 - 29/04)

Friday

Very Important People, 9:30pm Channel 4 (Friday 27 April)

After the failure of her first attempt at a sketch show, The Morgana Show; Morgana Robinson is back on our screen this week in a brand new impressionist show with Terry Mynott. Featuring among others, a very accurate and foul-mouthed Gordon Ramsey, the absolute spitting-image of Noel Gallagher and what could easily be cameo appearances from Amy Childs and Natalie Cassidy, this series seems to be set for a more successful reception. Aiming not only to poke fun at the celebrities we know and love to hate, but also at the celebrity culture we’ve created, the show will feature a topical sketch filmed in the week of transmission to keep up with our ever evolving need for the latest celeb gossip. The trailers had me laughing straight away and Friday night will see if it gets the Series Link seal of approval.

Saturday

Mean Streets, 10:30, BBC 2 (Saturday 28 April)

Set in the 1970’s and written & directed by Martin Scorsese, Mean Streets is a crime film that sees Italian-American Charlie try and work his way up in the local New York mafia all the while looking out for his hopeless gambler friend Johnny Boy. Godfather, Goodfellas-esque similarities come to mind but Mean Streets stands on its own a great gangster film. It shows a less glamorised version of the mafia lifestyle, the day to day reality for those lower down on the food chain but the familiar theme of trying to get out but every time being pulled back in is ever present.

Sunday

The Bank Job, 10:05PM, Channel 4 (Sunday 29 April)

I’ve found it to be a sort of rule that any move starring Jason Statham is worth watching. A well-directed British Heist Thriller is always entertaining and The Bank Job has all the action and excitement required for a great Sunday night movie. Based on the 1971 bank robbery in Baker Street which despite a massive £3million haul, was never formally reported nor any arrests made due to rumours the heist was linked to a Royal sex scandal kept secret by the government; this comic heist movie doubles up as a cheeky exposé.
